About

Hello! I am a writer, editor, and violinist, and for the past eight years I've coached students through the college application process.

In the 2022-2023 application cycle, my students received admission from Stanford, Columbia, Duke, Northwestern, UVA, Carnegie Mellon, Tufts, Bates, Vanderbilt, Case Western Reserve, and many others.

When I was in college (Dartmouth '16), I became interested in creative writing. During my time there, I won the student awards for best Short Story and Best Creative Work. I also founded the campus literary magazine. In the years since, my essays and fiction have been published in esteemed literary magazines including Gulf Coast, CRAFT Literary, and The Offing. A full list of my publications and awards can be found at my personal website, robbieherbst.com.

After graduating from Dartmouth, I channelled my passion for writing and editing into the world of admissions, and I began working with rising high school seniors in 2016. Since then, I've worked wi...

My process

I work with students at all stages of the essay writing process, from selecting a topic to careful line-edits. I specialize in helping students craft original, thought-provoking work that is true to their voice. Are you worried you don't have anything to write about? I will help you discover what from your life will make a stellar essay. Have an idea, but struggling with structure, voice, or genre? I have helped students transform their fragments into powerful pieces of writing that have gotten them into Ivy League schools and won major scholarships. My fundamental belief is that no two students are alike, and each one has something worth saying. I will bring patience, wisdom, and insight to help you reach your essay-writing goals.

Set a focus for each session or get help with any aspect of the admissions process.

Med School Essay Brainstorm

$175.00 / 60 min

Applying to Medical School is grueling, but I can help alleviate some of the headache. I will help you develop a winning essay that will stand out in Med School admissions. In this session, we will review your resume and background and discuss possible angles for a personal statement. We can also use this time to review writing you've already produced and discuss supplemental essays. I have coached students through all parts of the Med School process, including interviews and residency applications.

Transfer App Brainstorm/Essay Review

$150.00 / 60 min

Thinking about transferring? Have an essay draft but don't know where to go from here? I will talk you through what colleges look for in transfer applications and how to write a compelling personal statement (HINT: they are different from the application essays you wrote the first time around). Other topics we can go over: recommendations, interviews, things you can do to make your application stand out - anything you might need to have success in the process! My students have received transfer admittances from schools like Columbia and Vanderbilt. If you are on the fence about whether to transfer or not, I can also talk you through the decision and whether it is worthwhile.
