Should I Include Both a Résumé, and an Essay in My UTD Application

This fall, I plan on applying to the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD). At UTD, Applicants have the option to submit a supplemental résumé and/or a Personal Essay. While I technically don't need to do either since I'm in the top 10 percent of my graduating class (which will make me eligible for automatic admission), I want my application to be as strong as possible so that they'll consider giving me scholarships.

I've been working on my résumé for awhile now, but I'm having trouble deciding what to write for the essay. I feel, that trying to write an essay is consuming too much time that I should be spending searching for other scholarships to help fund my education.Would submitting a résumé, and not an essay, diminish the quality of my application? Thanks!
