85 in Honors Algebra in Semester 1
Answered

I finally got my transcript and received all As in every class except Honors Algebra 2.

I got an 85. Is this a deal breaker? Am I out of contention completely?

With sadness,

Of course not! I only barely got a 90 in Honors Algebra 2, and I can say with confidence it won’t lower your gpa much if it’s the only B you get. Harvard cares more about challenging yourself and getting a B in an honors class than excelling because you’re taking a regular class. However, especially if the Ivy League and schools at that level are your main goal, you’ll need more AP and honors classes, and most of them need to be As. If you continue to struggle with getting As in math, my suggestion is a tutor. I know what you’re thinking, an 85 isn’t a bad enough grade to require a tutor. But it’s not about having a bad enough grade to need help, it’s about needing a good enough grade to get into Harvard. Most Ivies have average accepted gpas of around 3.9, so the margin for error isn’t very wide. Like I said earlier, an 85 will of course not ruin your chances, but you don’t want to keep getting Bs. One or two are okay, and obviously gpa isn’t the only thing they look at, but it’s still important. I hope this response was helpful!

An 85 is certainly not a deal breaker! One B on your transcript will not significantly lower your GPA. You could even have several B's on your transcript per year and still do very well. A GPA above a 3.7 unweighted will make you competitive for any school.

Hope this helps!
