Extra Curricular Ideas
Answered

Does anyone have any extra-curricular ideas? I'm a sophomore going into my junior year and I only do dance team and girl scouts. Any ideas of anything else I could join?

The extracurriculars you may choose can depend on what your school and the places around you offer. If you are considering school clubs as extracurriculars, consider looking into clubs that interest you. Most clubs recruit at the beginning of the school year, so be sure to keep an eye out for that. If there is something that interests you that your school doesn't offer, that would be a great opportunity to create and lead a club of your own -- a great resume builder.

As for things outside of school, there are quite a few things you can get involved in, even over the summer. Personally, I am doing a lot of tutoring over the summer as volunteer work. Depending on your interests, you should be able to find quite a few things to get involved in throughout the summer and the upcoming school year. Consider taking a look at this site: https://www.volunteermatch.org. If you are interested in volunteering, this site offers a bunch of virtual opportunities as well as potential activities near you.

I hope this helps, good luck searching!

My top advice when looking into extracurriculars is to find things that you enjoy doing! It could be a good idea to give something a shot, even if you're not entirely sure you'll end up enjoying it. If you learn that it's not something for you, there's no shame in leaving in search of something else.

If your school has a theatre program, I think that's one of the easiest ways to get involved. There's typically room for actors, stage crews, and pit orchestra. I did hair and makeup (mostly hair) for my school's two productions each year.

Clubs usually recruit toward the beginning of the year (by holding a club fair or otherwise), and it's usually then that I sign up for anything that I think will interest me. It's never too late to join a club though, so even joining halfway through the school year won't hurt. Another option when it comes to clubs is founding your own club. It can be based off of anything that interests you (the most recently created club at my school is called "What They Don't Teach You In School").

Volunteering is also a huge source of extracurricular involvement for me. I currently volunteer with the local food pantry and public library. I know several people who also volunteer with shelter houses, animal shelters, and local nonprofit organisations.

Asking around and talking to others who are involved with the school and community helped me find a lot of things I was interested in getting involved with. I hope this helps with your search!
