Hi! I am a junior and have been joining a bunch of different college sites. On collegevine, it says I have below-average extracurriculars but I'm confused by this. I was/ am a member of:
- I was a member of the color guard for three years as a varsity member, state champion, and world semi-finalist
- school philosophy club and am the serving secretary (debate philosophical topics)
- DECA (A financial and business club for competition)
- Creative Writing Club (club to share a critique of each other's writing)
- Big Future Ambassador (connects peers to resources on big future)
- Carbon Crew (a climate change awareness volunteer group)
- Luv Michael (a volunteer group helping autistic adults gain employment)
I will most likely major in psychology to become a criminal profiler, but have an interest/ skills in accounting. I am in the psychology, forensic, and accounting classes as they are offered here.
How are these considered below average seeing as I have been part of 7 groups? What should I do to increase the appeal of my extracurriculars/ what should I join?
Hey!
I think you have great extracurriculars, but from just reading them, I can't tell who you are as a person. You should join initiatives that offer insight into what you really care about. I myself created an international passion project that I'm working on right now. If you are looking for volunteering opportunities to upgrade your resume, Hilom Collective might be the right place for you. We are a new ORG focusing on mental health issues, offering peer-to-peer counseling and webinars. If you are interested, we have different positions available no matter your academic interests or passions! We seek support group facilitators, social media managers, graphic designers, staff writers, fundraising team members, and Discord/Reddit/Website moderators.
If interested, DM us at @hilom.collective on Instagram or respond to this message.
That absolutely sounds like something I'm interested in! I've submitted the team application but am having issues messaging you on Instagram.
I saw an account with the name zoe followed us. I followed back in case you want to ask further questions. If that was not your account, leave it here so I could follow you
It was thank you!
hi there!
extracurriculars are also about impact, and not just about doing them to do them. i think that is what gets a lot of students wrapped up and confused. having a lot of extracurriculars is good, but showing an impact, leadership, and/or positions held makes them even stronger.
it is also important to do what you are passionate about. but relating your extracurriculars with your intended major or career is usually important to building a "spike" (or a specific interest) for that field in which an institution can understand more about your aspirations in that field.
you are a junior, you still have a year to make an impact and get leadership roles!
I honestly can't tell what your main idea is in your clubs and extra currciulars. I think there should be a pattern in what you want to do. I am the vice president (or was) and secretary of my school's karaoke club, I also want to major in finance so I joined the finance club. I am also learning Korean as a language and doing taekwondo, Korean martial arts, so on so on. I hope this gives an idea in patterns how there should be a pattern in what you want to do. I think that you should go back and go into broader groups that also resemble with the groups you have taken. So like a color guard group, or a philosophy class, so so on
I somewhat understand the premise of showing patterns through clubs, but I'm a little confused. What do you mean by joining classes or general groups? I take both a psychology and forensics class as those connect to my major and my school doesn't have any related clubs. I also have some interest in pursuing finances so I take an accounting class and have joined my school's DECA chapter. Does this not show a connection as I have other extracurriculars? The others are areas of interest and volunteer projects I have a passion for.
Sorry if this is a stupid question. :/
Ohh Okay! I didn't know what the groups or classes were so I thought they were out of what you wanted to do, If your school doesn't have any related clubs maybe make one, ask a teacher how to lead the club and what the club should offer
Its not a dumb question, I just thought the clubs were out of what you wanted to do I didn't know they were connected lol
Okay, thank you! I didn't add the info in my post because I didn't realize it was relevant. :/
I think it would create a simpler idea of what your extracurricular are if you add like what each extracurricular or club was, so you could get more help on this
