Calc over the summer??

Hi. I'm currently taking Pre-Calc/Trig this school year and plan to take AP Computer Science Principles, DC Finite, and AP Statistics next school year. (I am a very mathematical type of person.)

I was wondering if I should take calculus over the summer, just in case the school I plan to go to prefers that class over another, especially if they take dual credits.

This class will be free of charge for me, so I was unsure if I should take this or something else. I mainly want to take this course because it will take up some time over the summer that way I have something to do.

I am already on track to graduate from high school with two associates, and I don't need a specific class to achieve that. If it helps, I plan to study linguistics (I mainly want to focus on psycholinguistics, but I've been looking into more of a data science mix as well).

So... Should I take Calculus over the summer (an 8-week long online course), take a different class (like intro to creative writing or poetry or something), find something else to take up my time over the summer, or just give myself a break?

Heyy!!

This is coming from a junior- Even though you're a very mathematical type of person, I personally think taking calculus over the summer is just going to be too much to place on your shoulders. I mean, you already have 2 associates on the way, and even more APs and DCs. I think you should take extracurriculars in the summer rather than subject courses. Most colleges also want to know that you have a life outside of just studying, and summer is the best time to showcase that. Also, enjoy life during summer 😭. I'm a little late to the poll, but that's my thoughts on your questions. Also, what is DC finite? As far as I know, they don't offer that at my school.

Calculus is amazing, but I personally suggest you do something else with your summer! If you are on track to graduate with 2 associates, you are and will be working hard all school year. Speaking from experience as a senior in HS, you can only do that for so long without burning out. I focused so much on school that my health declined at the end of 10th grade. Then I took 11th grade slower, because I was already ahead, and took more fun, creative classes in my field of interest. I also knew senior yr would be intense (I took all community college classes, 4 one semester and 3 the other, 4 of all 7 were accelerated) so I focused on other beneficial activities. My health got better, which ended up being super important because now my health is crashing again 🙃

Anyway, long story short, pace yourself. Don't burn out before college. Maybe you could get involved in more extracurriculars or get a job. Whatever you do, be intentional and refresh your body and mind. We are not made to study all year round every year! I completely understand the urge to use the time as an overachiever but it is very wise to strengthen your mind, body, and soul before another strenuous year.

Lmk if you have any questions!
