Transferring Credits
Answered

Hi everyone

So I am starting my junior year of High school next year and taking classes at Kirkwood. By my senior year, I plan to have taken 14 Kirkwood classes and 2 AP (English and Calc). Is there anything that I should worry about when thinking about transferring credits? I just want to make sure that I can transfer everything I've done. I really want a school with a strong psychology Major.

Hello!

I'm a graduating senior who is successfully transferring in 9 college classes (around 29 credits). My goal was to complete as many gen ed classes as possible for cheaper, so I dual enrolled at my local community college. When selecting my classes, I really wanted to make sure everything would transfer in seamlessly. One important note is that I already knew what college I wanted to attend and what major. On my community college website, I found a special credit equivalency system that allowed me to compare classes between the community college and the university I wanted to attend. Because I knew my desired major, I found the list of planned out gen eds for the major at the university and then was able to use the credit equivalency system to find equivalent classes at the community college that the university was guaranteed to accept due to agreements between the 2 schools. From there, I planned out all the classes I could take and took them!

Of course, the main reason it was easy was because I knew exactly what university and major I was transferring into. You know you want psychology, which is a good beginning. If you don't know the university yet, then I would aim for common gen eds that would be widely accepted. For example, most majors require 2 English classes, 1 and 2. Sometimes it's called English Composition 1 and 2 or College Composition or College Writing. Your community college definitely offers an equivalent for that! If you're already looking at multiple universities, check out the gen eds each school would require for psychology and find common threads. Then look for a credit equivalency system on the community college website and find matching or likely matching classes. You may want help from a community college advisor. And at the very least, if your future university does not require a class you want to transfer in, they may accept it as elective credits.

Hope this is very helpful and please reply with any questions!
