Is a passion project worth it?

I'm in my last few weeks of junior year trying to make sense of what I'm doing this summer. I just got a nice telescope for my birthday in the winter and I plan to major in something related to astronomy or physics. It would be cool to somehow incorporate it into a passion project but I've heard from some that these kinds of things come off as soleless and performative in applications but other people call it the best thing you can do. I have no idea who to trust.

Passion projects are really good for college applications and if you're intending on majoring in something similar to your project, then that would be even better. And I reckon most admissions officers can tell if the project is "soulless" or if you are actually passionate about the topic. So as long as you can construct a good passion project, and a clear narrative around it, I think it is worth it with what you're planning on doing :)

From what I understand so far, I know that colleges love when your activities align with your major or are closely correlated to "central activities". I think that if you love astronomy, you should go for it, as long as you are willing to spend real time on it. It shouldn't be another thing just for college applications, at least that's what colleges want. Even if it doesn't bear any fruit, which I find unlikely, you at least did something you enjoyed.
