Advice for upcoming high school-+ junior to stay on track for CS major?

Hi! I am going to be a junior soon and I want to make the most of it. I moved to the U.S. from another country and didn't know much about how things work here, so I feel like I missed some chances earlier.

Now I am aiming to major in computer science and want to do everything I can to stay on track. I have taken AP Computer Science A and Intro to Programming in Java. I plan to take both the SAT and ACT and AP Calculus later on, but I will be in Algebra 2 in junior year, and there is an option to learn Honors precalculus over the summer, and if I pass the exam, then I can take the next course.

What are the most important things you did (or wish you did) in junior year to help with college admission and CS?

I would really appreciate any tips or lessons from your own experience!

Hi!

Rising senior here, my junior year was quite crazy. I understand the feeling of moving internationally to the U.S. in the middle of high school, I went through the same thing!

I've learned that college admissions don't just look at what classes you've taken or your grades. While those things are super important, extracurriculars also hold a huge weight when admissions view your potential and drive to do your best!

Finding clubs or organizations that benefit technology and computer-based activities that include programming, technology, or just STEM in general, is a great way to boost your appearance and stand out to colleges!

Also, while junior year might wanna kick you in the butt sometimes, you have to keep your head high and push through. Don't let yourself get burned out, and advocate for yourself! Don't be afraid to ask questions because 9 times out of 10, another student has the same question and is too scared to ask.

Good luck with your CS dreams and keep pushing forward!

Thanks for taking the time to reply, I really appreciate it. It actually helped hearing from someone who’s been through something similar. I will join STEM Clubs/organizations like you mentioned, and I was also wondering, would doing a small passion project and getting a job help with college stuff too?

Wishing you the best for senior year

I think that’s a great idea! Putting yourself out there, getting something going, and being able to project what your passion is for when you study in college is a great way to stand out from others in the application process.

While getting a job is beneficial and shows a sense of maturity, it’s solely off of your preferences and abilities. If you can multitask with several work days in a week, plus extra curriculars, then sure, go for it! But if you struggle to handle it all, it’s not necessary.

Good luck!

Thanks Grace! I’m trying to start tutoring too, but I’m not really sure how to find students. Some of my friends are doing it, but when I asked, they kind of just said it’s a secret how they found people who needed help 😅.

Also, sorry if I’m asking too many questions. I really appreciate you taking the time to reply.
