I am a rising junior for the 25-26 year and I plan to go into Urban Planning or Poli Sci/Public Policy. My dream schools are Boston University and University of Washington. My school is a private school in Missouri, and it does not technically list honors on class descriptions because every class is considered honors. My school offers 10 AP classes, and I plan to take 8 of them with the track I am on, but I'm worried that my transcripts won't reflect the amount of rigor demonstrated in my classes. Does this put me at a disadvantage of any sort, and is this something that I should state on my applications in the future or ask my counselor about when school starts again?
Colleges are able to see what classes your school offers, and if none of the classes are listed as honors, then you are not at any disadvantage than any other student applying to a school that has all honors classes. The important thing is that you take advantage of the AP classes and any other college classes offered because those are the opportunities you have, and colleges can see that. You want to show you took advantage of what your school offered. If those classes are considered honors, possibly ask your counselor if there is a way that can be make it clear that these classes are honors classes. Another important thing to consider is that classes are only a small portion of the battle, and other opportunities your school offers, such as ECs, leadership opportunities, community service, and internships. You want to make sure your full application through ECs, Grades, Classes, Essays, and references showcase why you want to go to these schools and that you fit and you are going to succeed at their university.
Your school counselor should list all of this when transferring your info to the college upon application through your school report. They will be able to see that all courses offered are honor classes with more rigor. This being said you shouldn't be at any disadvantage necessarily as long as you are taking as many rigorous courses as you can. You can always clarify with your counselor for the transfer of information to the colleges but overall you should be in a good position with coursework!
