ECs for a rising Junior aspiring to go to BC (Boston College) with an English Major

Hi! I am a rising Junior and I am looking for strong extracirriculars or tips for ECs that will impress BC and align with my English Major.

I am already a decorated poet. I have local poetry awards from colleges and private organizations, I have also won a honorable mention, silver key, Gold Key, and American Voices nomination from scholastic regional.

I attend writing internships and have been published via these internships (I do not want to give away my loco so I am not going to reveal where these internships are, however it is from a very reputable place that is internationally recognized). I also have gained publications from national places, and have been published for memoir writing, poetry, and research essays. Most of these involve women's issues, which is a major passion for me.

I do community service, ect, but I am really looking for something to strengthen my chances! Thank you!

If your school’s team has any sort of Academic Decathalon, you can get involved there. I would also consider any public speaking / communications tracks as minor arcs to get involved. Public speaking (Speech and Debate, mainly), has great resources to show your interest in English beyond more traditional routes. Competing in varsity tournaments and even qualifying for state / NSDA Nationals for Oratory, After Dinner/SOS, Prose, any limited prep event, or Poetry might help you stand out. Diversification is a big thing. Because you seem to be a versatile writer, even doing HOSA, competing in written / research based events and qualifying for SLC (Which is fairly easy), and ILC are great ways to stand out! Competing in leadership conferences such as The National Hispanic Institute and others that aren’t super cash grabby are also super great! If you haven’t already, consider a passion project (Creative writing IG? Region based writing workshops) You’re already at a great baseline, though :)

Thank you so much! I'm trying to get into public speaking this year! I have a passion project that clears more into my women's issues as my passion project, I have an equally extensive background in that area, but I am going to apply to be Youth Poet Laureate of my town my senior year and will organize community events per that! I also mentor young girls interested in cheerleading, and help out with local sports teams! I also founded a charity event that hosts a community art-based event that raises money for the homeless (and has raised thousands since)! Thank you SO much for the recs!! It really helps me out!!

If your school has an English team related to your state's academic team or academic bowl. Participating in that would give you more activities related to an English major, which you stated you are aspiring to complete. Some other possible advice would be, in this community service, are you leading or just participating? Maybe creating a club or mentoring younger students or community members on writing skills, or English skills, could help your application. Continue to ask yourself if your activities are contributing to your spike in your application, or just an activity you are participating in. Colleges can tell 95% of the time when an activity does not truly empower what you are passionate about and is just an activity.

I lead most of my community service projects and I am planning to lead a Humanities based project my senior year for my town's youth poet laureate! Thank you SO much for the feedback!

I would say join Speech and Debate, if you're not already. It's a great way to show off your writing skills, and going to state, regionals, or nationals looks really good on college apps!
