Try to get A's and B's this year and try to take an AP class if possible even its only one
Take all the extra credit opportunities you can, try and get work in as fast as you can, I know its stressful but it pays off in the long run, and take AP classes to help boost your weighted GPA. Ultimately the amount of work you put in will reflect on your grades.
Studying and completing work is the obvious answer, but I know its easy to fall behind sometimes. What has been helping me stay top of grades is making list of all words I need to study for each class and put it into one big learning game like Gimkit while I listen to khan academy videos. I like to research the upcoming unit's terms on my own so that lectures are a review. As far as actual grades go, if you are behind you may want to pay special attention to projects and tests. They will make up most of your grade, so those are the priority. Don't be afraid to ask your teachers for help. It doesn't hurt to ask for extra time if you have something big going in in your life. Most teachers are very understanding, and at the very least, they can set aside some time to explain concepts deeper. Just showing up to tutoring shows that you care, and building that relationship with those adults in your life will pay off.
Take more rigorous classes (AP,Honors, college classes) and get good grades in them. It is simple as that
