Need help on how to do like practically everything.
Answered

So, I'm a junior who just joined the American public school system. I used to live in another country up until last year. Because of the fact I'm new, I had to take so many grad requirement courses. Because of this my application isn't that strong. I want to get into UMD. I have no strong EC's which is my main weakness and I obviously didn't take the ACT or the SAT yet because I was placed in Algebra 2. I've already had some plans in mind to complete Pre -calc before my senior year. So that's not an issue. I currently have 2 AP's which are said to be easy( I agree) and next year I'm planning to take 5 hard AP's,most of which are STEM. Oh, and I also want to pursue Computer Science. Please share your thoughts on this.

TL;DR: I have no EC's which will consolidate my acceptance chances and I'm wondering about other ways to increase my chances into getting into UMD.

To strengthen your application to UMD for Computer Science, focus on building a robust profile starting with extracurricular activities related to tech, such as joining a coding club, participating in hackathons, or even starting your own club if one doesn’t exist. Prepare for the SAT/ACT, as a strong score can bolster your application; consider taking practice tests and familiarizing yourself with the math sections, which you'll be ready for after Pre-calc. Your plan to take five AP courses next year is excellent, especially in STEM, so ensure you manage your workload to maintain high grades. Look for summer opportunities like tech internships or university summer courses to gain practical experience. Additionally, aim for leadership roles in your activities to demonstrate initiative and leadership skills, both valuable traits for college applications. What are your thoughts on prioritizing these steps, and where would you like to start?

Welcome to the US! I recommend that you find some sort of extracurricular this year. It doesn't have to be a school club, it doesn't have to cost money- it should be something you're passionate about. It could be a job, a personal research project you publish, join your school's choir or soccer team, etc. Also, please be careful taking 5 difficult APs. Yes, you get a GPA boost, but doing well is important. It's better to have 2 As in 2 AP classes than 5 Cs. You also don't have to take the SAT and the ACT, if that takes some pressure off. It depends on the region, but in general more people just take the SAT. Good luck!

Getting involved in extracurriculars can be really helpful if you join one or two. Just keep in mind that being part of a lot of activities without taking on a leadership role might not be the best approach. It’s more important to aim for a higher status, like being a leader. Also, getting recommendation letters from your teachers who you have the best relationships with can give you a nice boost!
