I'm a junior in highschool and I actually don't know what an IB is... I feel like I should know but no one at my school is talking about it...
Is it like an exam?? and if it is what is it for (or subjects) and is it beneficial to take it?
Hi! An IB is similar to an AP class, though it's mostly used in the British curriculum and most colleges in Europe accept IB scores. IB stands for the International Baccalaureate. You can take IB courses or do the full diploma, both would look good for college. There are two types of IB courses, SL(Standard Level) and HL(Higher Level). Normally if you're doing the IB diploma you would take three SL's and three HL's. Additionally for the IB diploma you need to have CAS credit, which stands for creative, athletic, and service. IB's are really rigorous courses, especially higher level classes, and are graded on a scale of 1-7. There are other parts of the IB diploma as well, like: TOK(Theory of Knowledge), EE(Extended Essays), IA(Internal Assessment), IO(Individual Oral), etc.
Hello! From what I have seen, it looks similar to that of an honors class. Regular classes like math or history, just with a little ~zing~ to it (things that make your college applications look better.) It looks like it's more focused on community service, developing critical thinking skills, and self-discipline. It actually sounds really interesting to me personally. It definitely wouldn't be bad to take it, and it might make you stand out to colleges if you need that extra boost OR just wanna stay safe. You could ask your school advisory teacher/a trusted admin if your school has any IB opportunities or if the school can help you navigate whether or not IB sounds right for you, and if it does sound right to you, how to reach that. I really hope this helps!
