New interest in the middle of junior year - is it too late? Read description please!

Hi! I’m a junior right now almost ending my first semester. I have not found any interest or passion in anything that I would major in in college. I’m not looking to switch majors in the middle of my college years because (personal preference!!) I think it is a waste of my time.

I’ve recently narrowed my career choices: pediatric related jobs (nutritionist or just nurse, etc.) or biomed engineering. The problem is that I have not done anything related to those things because I recently just discovered some sort of interest in it. Is it too late? If not, what can I do? Also, if anyone has college recommendations for me that would be really helpful!

I had the same thing happen to me---I thought I wanted to be one thing, then switched quite drastically to another once I discovered the option existed in the first semester of my junior year.

As for options to explore these interests, it depends on your environment. If you live in an area with options to pursue internships, shadowing opportunities, volunteering, etc, definitely sign up or apply ASAP. You want to get some experience in if possible, not only for college admissions but also for your own purposes---you may not like what you think you might once you have that experience. However, if your area doesn't have many opportunities, I'd recommend doing some independent exploration, such as research or self-study. This will still show colleges you're interested and passionate, even though your area might not give you as many tangible opportunities to pursue your interests.

Overall, it's not "too late". Either do something independent or pursue opportunities ASAP. It's easy to find them online!

As for college recs, I don't have any specific ones. However, I would again recommend doing a Google search and figuring out all the qualities you'd like to look for in a college.

Hey Boba! I suggest joining a variety of clubs until the end of the year (if you have not already done this freshman year) and stick to the ones you like.

In addition, you don't need to find a career you want already! You're 16! I know many college students who don't know what they want to do. So, just focus on finding the right major. You can watch day in the life videos on Youtube to explore which lifestyle suits you best. Then, you can browse through average dropout rates of majors and look through questions that would be given in college. If you don't have an interest in those questions (for example, you might not feel inclined towards math questions), then try to stay away from that major (GPA matters in college too!)
