AP BIO STUDY TIPS

I'm a junior and I've taken AP bio this year. We mostly just take notes on the videos from collegeboard and do worksheets and the teacher doesn't really teach and give us exams so I wasn't really worried in the beginning. But, when we had an actual mcq & frq worksheet I realized I'm cooked for the AP exam. Although I study using the video notes I didn't know the mcqs and frqs could be so hard and there's time pressure too. I don't know what to do after this. How can I practice and study properly for the AP exam on May? I want to get atleast a 4.

Hey! For me personally, Khan Academy has been a LIFE SAVER. I went from barely passing to getting high Bs, which at least to me is definitely a massive improvement. Highly recommend! You can watch the videos (really helpful if you don't understand the content) and grind out the practice questions for all the topics, quizzes and unit tests. The questions have been actually really similar to my test questions, so it might be similar to yours (unless they are all the same for all AP classes, but I am not sure about that).

Never underestimate the usefulness of YouTube. The APsoloute Recap and The Amoeba Sisters are both good channels that go deep into topics. Also, I’d recommend doing reflections on your notes. Take class notes on the right side of your notebook, and then either rewrite the notes or quiz yourself in a question and answer format on the other side. This can be time consuming, but it’s an excellent way to really get the information stuck in your head. After this, give a short lecture on what you learned to a pet/houseplant/younger sibling/etc. This helps you fill in gaps in your knowledge by identifying things you only have a shallow understanding of. Finally, go on College Board to see AP Bio tests from the last few years. Try to do portions of these tests at least once a month in order to get more used to the AP format. If you follow through with these things, you should be just fine. I believe in you!

Hi!! I strongly recommend AP Bio Penguins and the practice questions, videos, and unit reviews on their website. Also, I recommend Mr. Poser on YouTube as well as the Khan Academy AP Bio practice questions. I feel like AP Bio is less memorisation and more application, so it is important to understand how concepts work.

I completely understand how overwhelming that can feel, but you’re taking a great step by planning ahead. Let's break it down together. First, aside from the video notes, consider utilizing AP Biology prep books, which often include practice exams and detailed explanations of answers. This can help you familiarize yourself with the format and types of questions you might encounter. Next, online resources like Khan Academy offer free practice questions and tutorials specifically designed for AP Biology. These can be a great supplement to your studies. Additionally, try to time yourself when doing practice questions to get used to the pressure of timed exams. Have you tried any practice exams yet, or are there specific areas in AP Biology you find particularly challenging?
