Best Schools for out of state?
Answered

So i'm a high school from Massachusetts and I've been tweaking my college list over and over. This is because I don't want to stay in state for college (a genuine dealbreaker because of mental health) and I'm having trouble figuring out the best places for me to study because Iocation is an important factor for me. I have a very rigorous transcript according to my guidance counselor I met with last week (4.2 WGPA, 3 leadership positions, APs and Honors etc.) I'm open to states with big diverse student cities and good schools for Psychology - my intended major. My long term plan is to get my PsyD, so I want a good foundation in undergrad before going to graduate school. Are there any schools/cities/states you would recommend for me?

Well NY is a great state for college. I would highly recommend Syracuse University, they have an outstanding reputation for psychology and it is a beautiful campus with diverse alumni. Also, NYU is another amazing school for your intended major and NYC doesn't get any more diverse. You definitely have the chance to apply and get accepted to these schools because of your significant transcript.

Hi @kkem!

That's a really broad question — there are a ton of big, diverse cities outside of Boston with great schools.

I'd start by narrowing down your preferred region. Would you rather live on the East Coast or West Coast? And, if the former, would you want to stay in New England, or move further down to New York (or even Virginia)? You could also find more standalone big cities in Florida or Texas. Each of these regions has at least a T50 school, so it really depends on what you're looking for.

I'd start by narrowing down a region you'd want to live in and looking up top schools there. You can start by using our school list hub and Chancing Engine (link in the sidebar), which will take all of your preferences (including cities) and give you recommendations based on whether they are safeties, targets, or reaches. From there you can do further research on individual schools to see which have the programs that are right for you.

Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any further questions.
