I am currently a sophomore at a private all-girls school in the Midwest. My GPA is a 3.8 to 3.9 right now, but that could go down later in my high school career. I am not in many honors and only 1 AP, unlike many people at my school. I do a lot of sports. I'm scared for what colleges I will get into because I want to get into a very top academic college and later go to med school in the future. Any advice? The college vine chancing is scaring me and says I have like no chance at a lot of schools I want.
Hi!
My advice is to take a lot of science and humanities classes. In medical school, you will take a lot of anatomy and other biology classes, and having background knowledge will help you in that field.
Another thing is to do a couple of extracurricular activities, but spend a lot of time and energy on them. Even if you are only in two or three clubs, if you spend a lot of time doing them, that will be more important than having twenty extracurricular activities.
Overall, colleges do not look for perfection; they look for potential. You do not need a perfect GPA; you need to show colleges that you belong at their school.

Definitely take more AP and honors classes if your school offers them, or self study them and take the test in May. Since you are a sophomore, you still have junior year to stack any APs you want. Your GPA is pretty high, so it puts you in a good place, but another huge factor is course load. Since APs and honors are weighted, they can bring your weighted GPA to above a 4.0, but they can also really quickly bring them down if you aren't doing well in those classes, so make sure to pick classes that you know you'll do well in, or have a genuine interest in.
If you are going to med school, the three APs that are very fundamental are AP Bio, AP Chem, and AP Physics. It's recommended that you take all three so you have basic knowledge a variety of science topics. Other APs that can also prove helpful are AP Psych, AP Lit, and AP Calc. These can help open more pathways to future medical careers.
Another option could be a sports scholarship. Many prestigious universities also offer scholarships if you excel in a sport.
Thanks! I know I cant take AP chem now because im not is honors chem which is a prerequisite for AP. Next year I will definetly try to up my course load if I can. Thanks for the help!
Hey, i'm a junior in the midwest! Dont stress about getting more AP's this year, most schools dont even offer more than 1 to sophomores. Is your profile updated correctly? that can really effect your chancing percent. Plus, theres way more things you have to do in the following years to get ready for college, things like act/sat tests dont happen until junior/senior year so i really wouldnt stress too much right now. Keep your grades up, do some clubs and extracurriculars and i promise you'll be doing fine.
ok thanks
