i'm a senior and a lot of my classmates are applying to 20+ colleges, and i'm wondering whether i should add more colleges to my list (currently 12) as well. i'm mainly looking in the northeast for colleges with good design and/or architecture programs (doesn't have to be an art school), affordable tuition or generous merit scholarships, and smaller class sizes if possible.
reaches: cooper union, wellesley, georgia tech
matches: lehigh, pratt, syracuse, parsons, rutgers, RIT, massart, ccny (applied to macaulay), brooklyn college (accepted)
I would say don't add any schools to your list unless you think you might go there. There are lots of fees associated with applying to a college, sending your SAT/ACT scores, and the time spent writing essays. Unless you think you might actually go there, there's no point, and you should spend that time doing something else, like applying for scholarships. Another thing to think about is that every time you get in somewhere, it means someone else is getting rejected, so there's no point in taking that opportunity away from someone else. Just because other people are applying to more schools doesn't mean you have to 12 is plenty.
Dear Maria,
I hope you’re doing well. My name is Keraji, and I’m currently a high school junior, but I am 17. As I move through the college application process, I’ve been thinking a lot about my goals and the kind of college experience I’m looking for. I would really appreciate the opportunity to meet with you to discuss my college list and get your perspective on whether I should add more schools or adjust my current choices. Your insight would mean a lot to me as I navigate this process. @kera.jit instagram profile, talk to me btw I am in the northeast usa maryland
Honestly? If you have the time, money, and other resources available, go for it. I'm only saying that because a lot of people don't have extra money lying around or extra time in their busy schedules, which is needed for the whole process of applying to a college. If you have some solid college choices, which I'm betting you probably do, then just relax and enjoy your last year of high school.
Remember, 12 good eggs are better than 20 rotten ones.
I think 12 is plenty of colleges to apply to, and it's not worth adding any more to the list just to apply, since then you're making yourself do more work, especially since you've already been accepted to one college so you know you'll at least go to college.
