What should I look for in a college if I'm interested in the military?

I'm interested in serving in the military after college. With that in mind, what should I look for in potential colleges to help set me up for success in the military?

Given your interest in a military career after college, there are several factors you might want to consider as you explore different schools.

One important aspect to consider is the presence of Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) programs on campus. These programs provide military training while you are still in school, and upon graduation, you are commissioned as an officer in the respective military branch. ROTC scholarships are also available, which can help financially support your education.

An additional consideration might be if the school has a well-established Veteran Affairs (VA) office. These offices can be instrumental in supporting military-bound students with resources, guidance, and education benefits.

Certain academic programs or majors could also be beneficial – such as political science, international relations, or physical sciences –- depending on the type of military career you're interested in. Schools that offer defense studies or military history could be a fit if you're interested in strategic aspects of the military.

The school’s physical fitness facilities and programs could also be important to you as physical preparedness is a core component of military service.

Remember to look beyond these factors as well. You'll want to find a school that fits your overall educational goals, interests, and personality as fostering your broader skills and interests can also make you a dynamic military officer. For example, leadership opportunities, which could come from clubs, sports, or student government, help develop skills that are valuable in a military context.

Use these details as a starting point in your college search to find institutions that can best support your goals. It might also be helpful to connect with college admissions counselors or ROTC contacts at your prospective schools to gather more specific information. Good luck!
