I'm thinking of going to Tulane, but I'm not sure about the whole Greek life scene. Can anyone give me the low-down on what it's like? Is it dominating or just part of university life there?
Tulane University does have a rather pronounced presence of Greek Life, with roughly40-50% of students participating in fraternities or sororities. It's a significant component of the campus culture, but of course, the level of significance varies with who you're asking.
If you join a Greek organization, your social activities might be largely based around it, including philanthropy events, social get-togethers, study hours, and leadership opportunities. This can give you an instant community of friends and resources. However, participation in Greek Life isn't a requirement to have a social life at Tulane. There are over 200 student organizations that offer plenty of opportunities for involvement outside of Greek Life, from art clubs and sports teams to academic societies and volunteer groups.
In terms of influence, it's hard to deny that Greek organizations do host some of the larger social events on campus and have a bit of a presence on the social scene. However, Tulane also has a number of non-Greek groups that have large-scale events and engage in community service. So while Greek life has a presence, non-Greek students also have plenty of opportunities.
The choice to join a fraternity or sorority truly depends on what you're looking for in your college experience.
