Hello everyone, I'm really interested in communications and considering UCLA for my undergrad studies. Can anyone share experiences or insights about being a Communications major at UCLA? Thanks!
Hello! UCLA's Communication major is a pretty diverse program offering students a range of foundational knowledge and skills in communication study. You can expect to touch on areas like combative discourse, organizational communication, interpersonal communication, and mass communication, among others. This eclectic mix prepares students for a variety of careers in fields like Broadcasting, Corporate Communication, Digital Media, Event Planning, Media Analysis, Public Relations, and more. UCLA's Communication major also stands out because of its emphasis on research. You'll have the opportunity to get involved in research projects through labs or independent study, which can be a valuable experience to deepen your understanding of communication studies. Plus, it adds brownie points to your resume!
In terms of classes, students appreciate professors who are engaging and knowledgeable in their fields. From what I've heard, classes can be quite demanding and some courses may have a heavy workload, but that's pretty typical for challenging and rigorous programs. The major is also popular and therefore quite competitive. It's an impacted major, meaning there's a limit to the number of students who can declare. Students usually apply to the major in their second year after fulfilling certain prerequisite courses and maintaining a specific GPA.
Make sure to take advantage of everything UCLA has to offer from the faculty, networking opportunities, internships, workshops, and speakers series. The surrounding LA area also provides plentiful opportunities for real-world learning and internships, due to being a hub for many media and communication-related industries. Best of luck in your journey!
