Umich vs Penn State: Need Advice

Having a tough time deciding between University of Michigan and Penn State. I'm considering a major in Business. Any insight about the pros and cons of both?

Choosing between two stellar universities like University of Michigan (UMich) and Penn State University (Penn State) can indeed be challenging, especially if you're considering a business major. Both schools have reputable business programs, but there are some differences.

UMich is home to the Ross School of Business, which consistently ranks among the top business schools in the country. Ross offers an exceptional Bachelor of Business Administration program that provides students with a strong foundation in business fundamentals while giving them plenty of opportunities to specialize. The curriculum allows a certain level of flexibility and the school's extensive alumni network can be invaluable when it comes to internships and job placement.

As a student at UMich, you'd encounter an academically rigorous environment and would be studying among some of the top students in the country. However, remember that Ann Arbor, where UMich is located, offers a vibrant college town experience with a bustling downtown area right off campus. Semester tuition here can be quite high, especially if you're from out of state, although the university does offer need-based aid.

Penn State, on the other hand, hosts the Smeal College of Business. The Smeal College is particularly known for Supply Chain Management, and overall, it's a solid choice for a business major. It may not have the elite status of the Ross School, but it still offers a comprehensive curriculum, high-quality faculty, and solid career opportunities.

Penn State is notable for its school spirit and tight-knit community bolstered by traditions and athletics. Depending on your preferences, this sense of community can be a significant advantage. Additionally, tuition at Penn State can be lower than at UMich.

Both institutions support plenty of extracurriculars and you'd have opportunities for leadership, which is a valuable factor for business majors.

Visit both campuses if you can, talk to current students and alumni, and think about your own preferences – academic environment, social scene, size, financial cost, etc. Both schools are great choices, so a lot depends on where you see yourself fitting in best.
