How do I best demonstrate leadership for my National Honor Society application?

Hey fam, applying to NHS and stuck on the leadership part. They want examples of leadership, but I'm not sure what counts. I've captained a sports team and organized a few events - does stuff like that work or are they looking for something more impressive? Would love to hear what kinds of leadership roles or actions you all included in your applications.

Absolutely, your experiences as a sports team captain and event organizer are fantastic examples of leadership! Being a captain isn't just about leading a team in matches—it involves strategic thinking, encouraging teamwork, and setting a positive example both on and off the field. And planning events requires attention to detail and adaptability. All of these are skills and abilities that NHS values.

When detailing your roles, emphasize how your leadership made a tangible difference: Did your team overcome a big challenge? Did the events you organized meet their goals? Answering questions like there concretely demonstrates your leadership impact. Remember, leadership is also about making those around you better, so highlight not only what you learned from your leadership experiences, but also how your guidance helped others succeed.

Besides positions with formal titles, you can also think about times you've taken initiative without being asked, like reaching out to a classmate who was struggling in your group project, or taking a few hours every Saturday to clean up trash in your neighborhood. NHS values students who show leadership potential in varied situations, not just "when the lights are on."

Good luck with your NHS application!
