Applied Mathematics at UC Berkeley

I'm really interested in studying Applied Mathematics and I heard UC Berkeley has a great program. Can anyone give me a rundown of what it's like? How about the admission criteria specifically for this program?

Absolutely, UC Berkeley has a highly acclaimed Applied Mathematics program, which is interdisciplinary and encourages the study of mathematics as it relates to other fields. The program really strengthens a student's ability to use mathematical theories and techniques to solve practical real-world problems.

Now, the admission criteria for the Applied Mathematics major are the same as the general admission requirements for UC Berkeley as a whole. Given this, you'll want to focus on maintaining a strong academic performance generally (a GPA of 3.4 minimum if you're from out of state), challenging yourself with rigorous courses, and demonstrating a consistent interest in your intended field. Remember that UC Berkeley is test-free, so SAT or ACT scores will not be considered. Subject exams are optional but can still add value.

Besides academics, you'll want to showcase your interest and experience in mathematics or related fields through your extracurricular activities. Maybe you participate in math competitions, run a math tutoring program, or have an internship related to the field. If you've had meaningful community service experience or an interesting job, those can also add value to your application.

You should also consider your essays as an opportunity to underline your passion and aptitude for applied mathematics. You can talk about a particular project, your goals in the field, or even a problem in the real world that you're interested in tackling with your applied mathematics knowledge.

Please remember, though, that UC Berkeley does not admit by major for undergraduate admissions (except in the College of Engineering and College of Chemistry).

Hope this gives you a useful starting point! Let me know if you have further questions.
