Inquiring about Music Opportunities at Tufts

Hi everyone! I'm seriously considering Tufts for college and I'd like to continue pursuing my passion for music there. Can anyone tell me more about the music program at Tufts? How are the faculty, courses, and overall experience?

Sure thing! Tufts has a vibrant music program that caters to a wide range of interests. The faculty here consists of distinguished composers, scholars, performers, and teachers, who are committed to providing a robust learning environment. From a course perspective, you can find introductory to advanced level classes in composition, music theory, music technology, and world music along with music history. Tufts also offers exciting courses in jazz, opera, choral conducting, music and film, and much more. One notable feature of Tufts' music department is the emphasis on world music where they offer instruction in instruments and genres from various regions such as West Africa and South India.

Extracurricular opportunities are also abundant, with a variety of ensembles you can join. There's the Tufts Symphony Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Orchestra, Chamber Ensembles, and several other choirs and singing groups. These groups often hold performances throughout the school year, which can be a great way to share your musical passion with the community. Also, these ensembles travel for performances nationally and internationally.

Don't worry if you're not majoring in Music. Non-majors can also take part in music-related courses and become part of ensembles at Tufts. They also have what is known as the 'Music Pass,' which allows any student, regardless of their major, to attend most Tufts Music events free of charge, which is a great opportunity to immerse yourself in the music scene.

Also worth mentioning is the impressive music facilities. Tufts' Granoff Music Center boasts a state-of-the-art,300-seat Distler performance hall, practice rooms, teaching studios, and technology labs.

So, whether you're interested in traditional music theory, music performance, or exploring various global music styles, Tufts' music department offers the resources and faculty to support your musical journey.
