What do recommenders see on the Common App?

Hey guys, I'm a bit anxious about asking my teachers for letters of recommendation. Can anyone tell me exactly what information recommenders can see when I invite them on the Common App? I want to be prepared for any questions they might have.

Absolutely, it's a great question to ask as you want to be as prepared as possible when requesting letters of recommendation. When you invite recommenders on the Common App, they receive instructions via email on how to submit the letter and on the deadlines your colleges have for submission. They will see the schools you are applying to and may see any specific forms those schools might require, such as a counselor recommendation or a midyear report.

However, recommenders do not see your personal essay or the rest of your application, including your other recommendation letters. It's basically a need-to-know basis to ensure confidentiality and impartiality in their letters. You can assist your recommenders by providing them with a resume or a summary of your extracurricular activities, however, as that can help them write a more in-depth and personal letter.

If they do ask questions about your application, they're likely just trying to gather context to fully support your candidacy in their letter. Be open and give them the information they feel they need–it's all designed to help you put your best foot forward!
