Juniors unite! So, I'm aiming for a career in medicine, hopefully as a doctor. What classes have you all taken or are planning to take to get a head start on pre-med requirements? Do you think taking more science or math classes will make a difference when I apply to college?
Hello there! It's fantastic that you're starting to think about your future in medicine so early. Aspiring pre-med students should take a challenging curriculum heavy in sciences, such as biology, chemistry, and physics, which will form a solid foundation for pre-med studies. Also, don’t overlook math—calculus and statistics can be very helpful since they are often prerequisites for upper-level science courses in college. Taking an anatomy and physiology class, if available, could provide valuable insights into the medical field.
Additionally, Advanced Placement (AP) courses in these subjects can be beneficial, not only for demonstrating academic rigor to colleges, which is crucial if you're going to be pursuing a track known for being difficult, but also possibly for earning college credit. This can free up your schedule in college a little bit to either take more advanced science courses or pursue other interests, which matters since many pre-med majors like biology, chemistry, and so on are quite course-intensive. And, just as importantly, these higher level classes will better prepare you to succeed once you actually step onto a college campus and start enrolling in more demanding classes.
Good luck with your journey of becoming a doctor!
