What benefits does a military spouse get for college?

Hey everyone, my partner is planning to enlist and I've heard there are some education benefits for military spouses. Do spouses really get free education or is it just a reduction in fees? Appreciate any insight y'all can provide.

Absolutely, military spouses often have access to various educational benefits, although the specifics can vary based on the branch of service and the individual's circumstances.

One of the major sources of assistance is the Department of Defense's Military Spouse Career Advancement Accounts program, also known as MyCAA. This program provides financial support of up to $4,000 for eligible spouses who are pursuing licenses, certifications, or associate degrees necessary for certain kinds of employment. Remember, though, that this money is usually earmarked for two-year programs, not four-year degrees.

Another resource is the Spouse Education and Career Opportunities (SECO) program. SECO provides education and career guidance, including free academic and career counseling.

There's also the Post-9/11 GI Bill. Service members can transfer all 36 months or a portion of their Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits to a spouse. This benefit may be used while the service member remains in the Armed Forces or after separation. This can cover full tuition for in-state students at public universities, but it might not cover complete tuition at private or out-of-state schools.

Unfortunately, none of these programs tend to cover the total cost of a four-year degree, but they can significantly lessen the economic burdens of pursuing higher education. Different services may also provide their own scholarships or tuition assistance programs for spouses. You'll want to connect with the specific branch of the military to see what aid might be available to you.

It's important to do your research, as every situation is different. Reach out to the appropriate military personnel or departments for the most accurate and up-to-date information pertaining to your specific situation.
