Translating Military Training into College Credits: How?

Hi everyone! I've done a lot of training whilst in the military and I'm curious to know whether any of it can be counted towards college credit? Has anyone been successful with this before or can share some insights? Thanks so much!

Absolutely, many colleges and universities recognize military training and experience for college credit. You can obtain a Joint Services Transcript (JST), which will detail all of your military training and experience with the recommended corresponding college credits, as evaluated by the American Council on Education (ACE).

ACE provides credit recommendations for formal courses or occupations on the basis of their content, length, intensity, and other considerations. The ACE credit recommendations appear in the Military Guide and on the JST itself. You can request your Joint Service Transcript (JST) online, and this can be sent to colleges to be evaluated for potential credits.

It's important to note that it's ultimately up to the discretion of each individual school to decide what, if any, credit they will give you for your military experience and training. Some schools may accept more military credits than others, while some may count this training as elective credits.

Lastly, don't forget about CLEP and DSST exams. These are credit-by-exam programs that allow you to get college credit for what you already know, regardless of where you learned it. The military covers the cost of these exams, so you can potentially earn a significant amount of credits this way.

Do remember to discuss these options with an advisor at the school you're planning to apply, as the process may vary. Good luck on your education journey!
