Converting Military Experience into College Credit

Hello there! With a few years invested in the military, I've learnt stuff that will surely contribute to my future academic journey. You guys know of any colleges that transfer military experience to credits? Thanks in advance.

Certainly! Many colleges across the United States will award credit for military training and experiences, which is based on recommendations from the American Council on Education (ACE). This is not a blanket policy, though, and the acceptance of these credits can vary significantly from one institution to another.

Here are a few universities that accept military transfer credits:

1. University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC): As a pioneer in the field of military education, UMGC commemorates a history of significant service to active-duty military, veterans, and military families. They accept credits from military experiences and also offer tuition assistance and scholarships for veterans.

2. Excelsior College: This university offers credits for military training, licenses, certifications, and experience, helping servicemen and servicewomen to earn their degrees faster.

3. Thomas Edison State University: It is another institution widely known for its generous credit transfer policies. They accept military training credits as well as credits from CLEP and DSST exams, which are free for military personnel.

It is still advisable to reach out to your college of interest directly or to review their transfer policies because colleges will vary in how they award credit. Furthermore, a review will not necessarily guarantee that all your experiences will be granted college credits, but the specific curriculum and degree requirements will determine what might be accepted.

There is also the Joint Services Transcript (JST) that you can use to document your military training and experience. Many colleges will use this as part of their evaluation process when considering military experience for credit.

Make sure to take advantage of this opportunity as it could save you a significant amount of time and money on your academic journey. Recapping your training and experiences and relating them to your intended field of study can be a valuable addition to your college application and subsequent academic journey. Best of luck!
