Do colleges value military service in admissions processes?

I’ve been considering enlisting in the military after high school and then eventually applying to college. Does anyone know if colleges value military service when considering applications?

Absolutely, colleges indeed value military service in their admissions processes. As a veteran, you bring valuable real-world experiences to campus, which can immensely enrich class discussions and the overall campus community. This type of experience can also convey to admissions committees that you possess certain traits they value, like leadership, resilience, and responsibility, among others.

Moreover, many schools have specific support services and scholarship opportunities for veterans. Veterans can be eligible for the G.I. Bill, which can substantially help with the financial aspect of obtaining a higher education. Beyond that, many institutions participate in the Yellow Ribbon Program, an initiative that provides additional funds for education without requiring extra charges to your G.I. Bill entitlement.

In your college applications, be sure to highlight the skills you acquired during your service—the adaptability, discipline, teamwork, global perspective, etc.—and how these will contribute to your future academic pursuit and the college community. Use your essay to give admissions officers an in-depth look into how your military service has shaped you personally and professionally.

Remember to also consider schools with a strong support system for veterans, as this can make your transition to college life smoother. Veteran friendly policies, campus veteran organizations, and dedicated school staff for veteran affairs, are all features to look out for when choosing a college.

So to answer your question succinctly, yes, colleges do value military service and it can be a strong component of your application when you decide to pursue higher education.
