Hello peeps! Recently, I've developed quite an interest in military colleges. But I'm finding it hard to ascertain the total number of them. Can anybody help me figure out how many military colleges there are in total?
Of course, happy to help! In the United States, there are five U.S. service academies that are federal academies:
1. United States Military Academy (West Point)
2. United States Naval Academy
3. United States Coast Guard Academy
4. United States Merchant Marine Academy
5. United States Air Force Academy
Now, besides these federal institutions, there are six state-level senior military colleges:
1. Virginia Military Institute
2. Texas A&M University
3. The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina
4. Norwich University
5. Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech)
6. University of North Georgia, Mary Baldwin University and Texas A&M University at College Station, though not traditionally considered within the same category because of their voluntary Corps of Cadets, are also classified as Senior Military Colleges by the Department of Defense.
Beyond these, there are few other institutes with mandatory cadet corps, such as the California Maritime Academy, and several others with optional Corps of Cadets programs like the University of Virginia, that could feasibly be included in the list, depending on your particular interests. So, the exact number can vary a bit depending on how broadly you want to define "military colleges", but the total of primary military colleges (service academies and senior military colleges) in the U.S. comes out to 11.
