I've had some serious training in the military and I was wondering if there are colleges out there that offer college credit for military training. If so, could you guys help me out with a few names or resources?
Absolutely! You'll be happy to know that many colleges give credit for military training. Military training can often equate to college credit due to the American Council on Education’s Military Guide, which recommends college credits based on a service member’s Military Occupational Specialty or completed military courses.
When you’re dismantling your Joint Services Transcript (JST), it will list all your military course completions along with the recommended number of credits, which you'll forward to your desired colleges.
In general, public schools are more likely to award credit for military training. As just a few examples, Penn State University, Arizona State University, and University of Maryland Global Campus are known for working with veterans and servicemen/women to transfer their military experience into college credits. There's also institutions, called Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges (SOC), part of the Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES) that have agreed to accept each other's courses in a particular program of study, making it easier for military students to transfer credits and complete a degree program.
Remember, though, each college has its own policy about transferring this credit, so you'll need to reach out to your chosen institution's veterans affairs office or a school counselor to understand how your training may translate into credits. It's also a good idea to provide them with your JST so they can pinpoint exactly which credits you may be able to earn. Good luck on your academic journey!
