How feasible is it to start college at 16?

I'm ahead in my coursework and have the opportunity to graduate high school early. I'm thinking about starting college when I'll still be 16. Has anyone done this or heard of anyone who's done this? Do colleges even admit students that young?

While it is not typical, it is certainly feasible for students to start college at 16. There are, however, some factors worth considering before taking this route.

First, colleges generally look for applicants who are well-rounded individuals, with experiences outside of academics. This usually includes extracurricular activities, leadership opportunities, or work experience. If you're graduating high school early, ensure that you are still able to build such a diverse profile. Remember that it's not just about the grades or advanced courses you took, but what you've done to enhance your personal growth besides academics.

Second, note that age alone would not prevent colleges from admitting a student. Colleges evaluate a student's readiness for college-level coursework and their overall potential. However, they do not typically have strict age restrictions. Some institutions may have specific guidelines or policies for underage students, so it would be wise to research your colleges of interest to understand any potential limitations or requirements.

Lastly, consider the social aspect of college life. Being younger than your peers can sometimes be challenging. However, this does not mean that you won't be able to find your community and form meaningful friendships. You need to assess whether you feel ready to join a campus environment right after graduating high school.

To directly answer your question, yes, many students have done this, and they have been successful. It does, however, require careful planning and consideration of the challenges and opportunities it presents.
