Do college admissions check for AI?

I've been hearing rumors that AI is used to check applications in the admission process. Is there any truth to this? If so, should I tailor my application to stand apart when reviewed by AI? I'm a little worried and would appreciate some clarity on this.

The use of AI in college admissions has been a topic of discussion and it's true that some colleges have started leveraging technology to aid in their application review process. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning technologies can help manage large volumes of applications and identify applications with qualities that align with the college's admission criteria.

However, it's essential to understand that human judgment is still at the core of the admissions process. Admissions officers consider numerous factors which include academic achievements, extracurricular activities, essays, letters of recommendation, and demonstrated interest. They strive to understand the whole person, taking into account their experiences, talents, and potential. AI cannot fully gauge these qualitative aspects, which are pivotal in decisions.

So, your application should first and foremost stand apart to human readers, not to AI. It’s best to focus on articulating your personal narrative, interests, and ambitions in an authentic and compelling manner, rather than trying to "optimize" your application for an algorithm. Instead of worrying about AI, focus on showcasing your story, your passions, and why you would be a good fit at the colleges you're applying to.

You'll want to write clearly and conscientiously, use appropriate language, and avoid jargon or slang that might confuse an algorithm. But these are also good practices for human readers, who appreciate clarity and precision in language. Don't stress about AI too much, and concentrate on making your application the best it can be for the humans who will ultimately make the decision.
