Need Info on CMU Early Decision

Yo guys! I’m starting to work on my college applications and I was considering applying to Carnegie Mellon University as an Early Decision candidate. Can anyone provide information on how the process works and if it's binding or non-binding? Thank you in advance.

Sure, happy to provide insights on this. At Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), the Early Decision (ED) plan is binding, which means if you're accepted, you're committed to attending CMU and will need to withdraw all other college applications. Early action is another term often used, but this is not a binding application. CMU does not offer early action applications.

The application deadline for ED is Nov 1, with decision notification typically mid-December. You would need to complete and submit the Common Application or Coalition Application, which includes CMU’s specific questions and writing supplement, and then officially enroll by mid-February. However, Early Decision is not available for programs in acting, directing, dramaturgy, and music theater or for the BXA Design programs or School of Music.

Other submission necessities comprise official high school transcripts and senior year schedule, two teacher recommendations, an optional counselor recommendation, official SAT or ACT score if available (as of the 2024-2025 application cycle, CMU is test-optional, but you can still submit these scores if you feel they enhance your application), and other specific program requirements (for example, the School of Drama requires an audition).

One essential note is that before applying ED, you should have a clear understanding of the financial commitment. While CMU offers need-based aid and is committed to meeting full demonstrated need for admitted students, those applying ED should use the net price calculator to get an estimate of your potential aid package.

Do note, very importantly, that due to the binding agreement, you must be absolutely certain CMU is your top choice if you want to apply ED. If there's any uncertainty, Regular Decision or Early Action may be safer routes, granting you the flexibility to compare acceptances and financial aid packages in the spring.

Hope this helps, and best of luck with your applications!
