What's the acceptance rate for the Computer Science program at Stony Brook?

I'm seriously considering Stony Brook for their Computer Science program but I'm having trouble finding specific acceptance rates for that major. Does anyone have some insights or relevant sources? What stats do accepted students typically have?

Unfortunately, Stony Brook University, like many other colleges, does not publicly release acceptance rates by major. However, you can consider that the general acceptance rate of Stony Brook for all majors was about 44% as of the last reporting period, but the Computer Science program is one of the more competitive ones, so it's reasonable to expect the acceptance rate for that program to be somewhat lower.

As for admitted student profiles, though the specifics for Computer Science aren't readily available, we can extrapolate from the overall admitted student profile. The middle 50th percentile for SAT scores of admitted students overall falls roughly between 1230 to 1410. The middle 50% of admitted students' GPAs usually ranged between 3.80 - 4.00 on a weighted scale.

However, remember, an applicant’s score and GPA are not the sole deciding factors in an admissions decision. They will also look at your extracurricular activities, leadership roles, work experience, and how well your academic interests align with what you want to study. This means if you've demonstrated passion and some level of achievement in fields related to Computer Science - like participating in coding competitions or building meaningful projects - they will weigh in your favor.

It would also be beneficial to write strong essays that convincingly articulate your interest in the Computer Science field, and why Stony Brook's program, in particular, is a good match for your career goals.

Finally, don't hesitate to reach out to Stony Brook Admissions directly for further information. It may not always be possible to get a response, but if you do, it's usually the most accurate data available. They may also provide additional insights into what they're looking for in applicants to the Computer Science program.
