As a prospective engineering student (Junior in HS), I want to know about the top five engineering colleges. What's their acceptance rate, the quality of program they offer and do they provide opportunities for internships or undergrad research? Which ones would you say are must-apply? Any response is appreciated!
Well, you're on the right track thinking about these factors. The quality of the program and opportunities available are just as important, if not more, as a school's rank.
MIT is arguably the best engineering school in the world due to its extensive research facilities and distinguished faculty. Acceptance rate is about 6.7%, so it's extremely competitive. Most students at MIT engage in research — around 85% of undergrads, in fact.
Stanford is also a top contender with an acceptance rate of about 4%. With its long-standing connection to Silicon Valley, numerous internship and work opportunities are available to students. Its engineering programs are consistently ranked top in the country. Internships and research opportunities are plentiful here.
Berkeley's College of Engineering is another fantastic option with an acceptance rate of around 16.8% for the engineering school. It's particularly noted for its strong programs in areas like civil and electrical engineering.
The California Institute of Technology (Caltech) has an acceptance rate of about 6% and it's notable for its hands-on approach to learning. Almost all of its students engage in research.
University of Michigan's College of Engineering is another top school not to be overlooked. The acceptance rate is about 22.9% and the school offers a wide range of engineering disciplines. It has fantastic research opportunities, with many of its departments ranked in the top 5 nationally.
Each of these schools offers an incredibly strong program in engineering with access to extensive research opportunities and internships, so if you are very high-performing, these could be must-applies for you. Good luck, and remember that while these schools are fantastic, there are many other exceptional programs out there as well!
