Insight into UW Informatics acceptance rate

Hey guys! I'm seriously considering applying to the Informatics program at the University of Washington (UW), but I'm kinda nervous about its competitiveness. Does anyone have any insight into the acceptance rate of the program? Any additional information on the average GPA or extracurriculars of accepted students would be really helpful too!

The Informatics program at the University of Washington is indeed a highly competitive program. While they have expanded class sizes in recent years, the acceptance rate is typically around 30-40%. However, please note that this can vary year to year depending on many factors such as the number of applicants, available spaces, and the quality of applications.

The average GPA of admitted students can vary, but generally speaking, successful applicants tend to have an average GPA above 3.5. That being said, a lower GPA does not necessarily disqualify you from admission.

Regarding extracurricular activities, they make a positive impact on your application in two ways: they can demonstrate that you have a genuine interest in Informatics and they can show you are well-rounded, with skills relevant to the field, which can set you apart from applicants with similar academic credentials.

The admissions committee for the Informatics program is looking for students who are passionate about the field. They want to see that you are engaged in activities related to Informatics outside of the classroom, so relevant extracurriculars like tech clubs, coding projects or internships in the field can be strong additions to your application.

While these numbers and activities seem daunting, remember that admissions also take into account your personal essays and letter of recommendation which can help to present a holistic picture of you as an individual. Thus, it's worth spending a good amount of time on these components of your application, even as you strive to maintain a solid academic record and participate in relevant extracurriculars.

Lastly, applying to the Informatics program is not a single shot. Many students apply more than once before being admitted, so don't get discouraged if you don't make it the first time.

Best of luck with your application!
