MIT major change policies?

Hey there, future MIT hopeful here! I'm just wondering what the odds are of being able to change my major down the line if I get in and decide my initial choice wasn't the best fit. Any current or past MIT students have any insights on this?

Sure, happy to provide some insight! At MIT, you don’t declare your major until the end of your freshman year. This gives you ample time to explore and experiment with different fields of study before committing to one. In fact, MIT encourages its students to take this time to explore, enabling them to make an informed decision about their eventual major.

Once you declare your major, if you find it's not the ideal fit, you can apply for a change of major. The process isn’t too complex. Normally, it involves meeting with the department's academic administrator or undergraduate officer to discuss the steps you need to take. Then you submit a form requesting the change. Most students report that this process is straightforward and quick.

Nevertheless, should you wish to switch into very selective programs such as Course 6-3 (Computer Science), the process would be more competitive. It's beneficial to reach out to and maintain communication with your academic advisor, who can help you navigate any complexities related to changing your major.

Lastly, it's not uncommon for MIT students to change their majors during their studies. Many students also choose to double major or add a minor, giving them an even broader academic experience. Remember, it's crucial to ensure that the major you select aligns with your passions and career goals.
