Can anyone shed some light on the School of Music at Rice University?

Music is my passion and I've heard good things about Rice University's School of Music. Can anyone here tell me more about it? Are there any unique features that stand out, or anything I should know before applying?

Rice University's Shepherd School of Music is known for its elite and intensive programs. The school attracts budding musicians from across the nation because of the emphasis on ensemble performance and private instruction.

For one, the Shepherd School boasts smaller class sizes which enhances the learning experience, giving students the opportunity to truly connect with their professors and fostering an environment where individualized feedback is the norm.

Moreover, Shepherd School also has fantastic facilities - including the new Brockman Hall, a state-of-the-art music and performing arts center, which opened in 2020. This facility has rehearsal rooms, individual practice rooms, a recital hall, and an opera theater, all of which are acoustically superior and provide students with an optimal environment to refine their craft.

As far as program options, there are both undergraduate and graduate programs, spanning Orchestra, Piano, Voice, and other instrumental studies. To highlight one program, their opera program, in particular, is top-tier and offers students the opportunity to participate in fully staged operas with professional-quality production values.

One of the hallmarks of a Shepherd education includes the opportunity for students to perform with the Shepherd School Symphony and Chamber Orchestras, and Rice Chorale, among other ensembles. This focus on ensemble performance provides ample opportunity to practice and perform with fellows students, which is key to their training.

Lastly, it is important to note that admission into this highly competitive program requires a pre-screening audition and an in-person audition for those that pass the initial screening. This is common for many music programs, so it would be a good idea to start preparing early and select pieces which truly showcase your talent and musicianship.

Let me know if you would find it helpful to know more about specific aspects of their programs!
