Seeking advice on attending college post-military

Hey everyone, I'll be exiting the military soon and am considering going to college. Can anyone offer advice on what to expect when transitioning from the military to a college setting?

Transitioning from military service to the academic environment can be quite a shift, but it's definitely a manageable task and can be extremely rewarding! There are several things to keep in mind prior to and during this transition.

Firstly, consider utilizing the benefits provided by the G.I. Bill. These can offset a significant portion of your tuition fees and living expenses. Some colleges also participate in the Yellow Ribbon Program, which can provide additional financial assistance.

Additionally, many colleges and universities have programs specifically designed to support veteran students. This may include veteran-specific orientation programs, academic advising, career services, counseling, and social groups.

As for academics, it might be a bit of an adjustment getting back into the "student" mindset. You've been in a ‘do as you’re told’ environment whereas college often stresses independent thinking and self-direction. It might be helpful to take advantage of academic support resources like writing centers and tutoring services to ease back into academic life.

Regarding campus life, transitioning to a college environment, especially a traditional four-year institution, may feel unusual, given the difference between military and college culture. You'll be surrounded by a much younger crowd, with different life experiences. However, you'll also have unique experiences and insights to offer your peers. Many colleges have veteran's clubs or similar organizations that can provide a supportive community.

Lastly, your military experience likely developed habits of discipline and focus, and these are invaluable skills in an academic setting. Remember to leverage these skills - they will likely be a significant asset in your academic journey!

Keep in mind that everyone's experience can be different, so this transition might take a bit of time, but the process is worthwhile. Best of luck in your journey to higher education!
