Arts Supplement for Princeton

Hey everyone, I'm an aspiring artist and I'm thinking about including an arts supplement with my Princeton application. Does anyone know what specifically they're looking for? Would it actually improve my chances?

Princeton definitely welcomes arts supplements as part of a student's application. They are especially interested in students who have an unusual talent or have made exceptional achievements in the arts. However, only a select few applicants will gain an admissions advantage from submitting one.

Unlike your standard application materials, the arts supplement isn't reviewed by admissions officers, but by the faculty in the corresponding arts department. This means your supplement will be assessed on a more professional level. Therefore, it's really important that your work is of high caliber and demonstrates significant proficiency in your medium. Consider whether your work might be considered impressive by a faculty member in that field, not just by your high school art teacher.

As for the kind of work you should submit, you should aim to show a range of styles, techniques and subject matter, but also a clear understanding of artistic principles such as composition, color and form. Your portfolio should also tell a story about your individuality and personality, so try to include works that are original and unique to you.

Do keep in mind that submitting an art supplement can go two ways. If your work is regarded as exceptional by the faculty, it could make you stand out from other applicants and give your application a boost. However, if your work doesn't quite meet the high level of proficiency expected by the faculty, it could potentially detract from your application. So it’s important to critically assess your work before deciding.

Hope this helps and best of luck with your application!
