Hey people! I have taken quite a few AP classes and I am curious how Tufts university treats these. Does Tufts offer college credit for high AP scores? If so, which scores are needed for which subjects? Thanks!
Hello! Tufts University does count many AP exams for college credit. However, they are quite specific on which exams they accept and the minimum scores you must receive on them.
For many AP subjects, Tufts requires that you've earned a 4 or 5 on the exam to earn credit. That said, there are certain subjects like Biology, Chemistry, Physics 1 & 2 and Physics C, where a 4 will grant you exemption from introductory courses, but only a 5 will earn you college credit.
AP Calculus BC is particularly unique: a score of 4 earns you one credit (essentially, placing you out of Calculus I), but a score of5 earns you two credits (placing you out of both Calculus I and II).
AP Computer Science, on the contrary, doesn't grant credit or placement regardless of the score. Similarly, for World History and US Government and Politics, no credit or placement is offered, despite the exam score.
You also need to be aware that Tufts has a5 pre-matriculation credit limit (credits earned before you officially start college). This limit includes credits from all sources, including AP, IB, A-levels, or college courses you may have taken during high school.
I'd recommend you to navigate through Tufts' AP Credit Policy page for complete accurate information, as the rules might vary slightly based on the particular department or major you're planning to pursue.
These policies are subject to change, and it's always a good idea to directly contact the Admissions Office if you have precise questions or unique circumstances. Good luck with your preparations!
