Marine Biology at UCSC?

I've been looking into UCSC's marine biology program but I can't find a whole lot of information online. How is it really, and what does it take to get accepted? Any advice or insight is greatly welcomed.

The Marine Biology program at UC Santa Cruz (UCSC) is quite renowned. It's uniquely positioned given the school's proximity to the ocean and specifically the Monterey Bay, allowing for ample research opportunities. The program is interdisciplinary and encompasses a wide range of topics such as ecology, zoology, botany, microbiology, genetics, cell biology, evolution, inorganic and organic chemistry, physics, mathematics, and statistics.

Undergraduate students can also take advantage of the campus’s partnerships with research institutions, like the Long Marine Lab, the Seymour Marine Discovery Center, and ones in Monterey Bay. These often provide hands-on research opportunities which can be invaluable in the field of marine biology. In terms of acceptance into the program, it's important to know that admission to UCSC is competitive. The application process requires a strong academic record. For the Fall2024 application cycle, the minimum GPA requirement for out-of-state students is 3.4 (though you'll likely need a significantly higher GPA for competitive programs like marine biology), and the school is test-blind - meaning they don't require or consider ACT or SAT scores in their admissions decisions.

It would also be beneficial to have some relevant extracurriculars or experience in the field, whether that be participation in environmental clubs, volunteer work with a local conservation organization, or meaningful summer research internships.

In your personal statement, consider focusing on your passion for marine biology, detailing any experiences that led you to this interest and your goals for the future. As you can't submit letters of recommendations unless they're specifically requested by the UC system, your personal statement is your primary avenue to convey your commitment and dedication to this field.

As you look into this program more, consider reaching out to the UCSC Admissions Office with specific questions or for more details. They might even be able to connect you with a professor or current student in the program who can provide even further insight.
