Question about UPenn's music program

I'm a junior and I'm seriously considering studying music in college. I've heard good things about UPenn's music program but don't know a lot of details. What's the reputation like? Anyone in or graduated from the program willing to share some insights?

UPenn's music program is part of the College of Arts and Sciences and it offers a comprehensive approach to the study of music, intertwining historical, theoretical and ethnomusicological studies with creative and performance opportunities. The program features a faculty of active scholar-performers, all of whom serve as primary advisors for students' independent research, and it cooperates with many art institutions in Philadelphia for internships and other practicum experiences.

One notable feature is the Benjamin Franklin Scholars program within the music major, which allows students to pursue interdisciplinary work and encourages intellectual risk-taking. Also, UPenn has an extensive collection of period instruments, and numerous ensembles which means you'll have plenty of opportunities to collaborate and perform.

As for the program's reputation, it is well-regarded although it may not be as famous as, say, Juilliard or the Berklee College of Music. That being said, the program does provide a solid foundation for those looking to continue their education at the graduate level or seeking careers in performing, composing, academics, or music administration.

Additionally, UPenn's strong offerings in other disciplines make it a great choice if you're considering a double major or if you have strong non-music academic interests. You should also remember that networking and internships can steer your music career path significantly, and UPenn's location in Philadelphia, a city with a robust music scene, can provide invaluable experience.

However, keep in mind that the great strength of music education at UPenn is its focus on academic approaches to music. It may not be the best fit if you're solely interested in performance or songwriting without the academic aspect.

As with any college decision, I recommend reaching out to current students or alumni to gain a first-hand perspective, as it can provide a more accurate picture of the program's strengths and potential fit for your interests. Remember, it's not just the ranking, but the fit that truly contributes to a successful college experience.
