I recently stumbled upon the RiSE program at Boston University. From what I understand, it's an intern program for high school students to gain research experience. Has anyone participated in this program before? How competitive is it to get in and what type of experiences did you have?
The Research in Science & Engineering (RiSE) program at Boston University is indeed a fantastic opportunity, particularly for students who are interested in STEM fields. It's geared towards rising seniors and offers high school students valuable insight into university-level research. As for competition, acceptance is selective, which is typical for these types of programs. It takes more into account than just your academic record. They’re looking for applicant's demonstrated interest and experience in science and research because you'll be conducting research in a university lab.
Students typically spend about six weeks on campus, and the engagement doesn't end there. The program incorporates professional development and networking opportunities, so you'll be able to establish and maintain connections with professors.
While I don't have direct experiences to share, I've heard many students who took part in RiSE talk about the benefits they gained: insight into the research process, learning to work in a lab, and exposure to a range of scientific disciplines. It can be a fantastic opportunity to gain practical experience and determine if scientific research is a career path you'd want to pursue.
As always, consider whether this is the best fit for your summer plans and goals, and whether you're willing and able to commit the time and energy it requires. It can be a very fulfilling and educationally rewarding experience for those who are passionate about science and research!
