SMU Application Date and Advice?

Hi guys! I'm aiming to apply at Southern Methodist University (SMU). To all the SMU applicants out there, when did you guys start your applications? Any tips on how to go about the process and maybe even some pitfalls to avoid would be amazing!

Hello! It's wonderful to hear that you're considering applying to Southern Methodist University. In most cases, applicants start working on their applications during the summer before senior year, so they have enough time to fine-tune essays, gather necessary documents, and seek out teachers for recommendation letters, among other things.

As for specific application tips:

1. Start early. Starting early will give you more time to brainstorm, draft, and revise your essays. The more thought and care you put into your writing, the more it shows to admissions reviewers.

2. Know your deadlines. SMU offers both Early Decision (ED) and Regular Decision (RD) deadlines, typically around November 1st and January 15th respectively. Since these dates are subject to change, always double-check on the university's official website. If SMU is your top choice and applying ED is financially feasible for you, consider applying ED.

3. Tell your unique story. SMU has its own supplemental essay prompts aside from the Common App essay. They are great opportunities to let admissions officers get to know you better. Remember, it's not just about the stories you tell, but how you tell them. The admissions officers want to see your personality, values, and ambitions. When answering these prompts, try to find a unique angle that gets across your individual experiences and passion.

4. Pay attention to details. Mistakes can make an application appear rushed or careless. So after you've composed your essays and filled out the application, review everything. Not just for grammatical errors, but to ensure every section is as strong as it could be.

5. Don’t be afraid to brag a bit. This is your opportunity to shine. Talk about your accomplishments, your talents, and the unique perspective you can bring to SMU.

6. Finally, don’t forget to show demonstrated interest. Even though it’s a small factor, it can still give you an edge, especially since SMU considers demonstrated interest. This could include participating in virtual tours, attending webinars, connecting with the SMU admissions team, etc.

Remember, college applications are about more than just checking off boxes. It's about communicating who you are, what you've accomplished, and what potential you have. Take the time to present yourself as accurately, honestly, and compellingly as possible. Best of luck to you in the application process!
