Hey everyone! I've been seriously considering applying to a UC for college, but I'm not really sure what I should be focusing on right now. I'm just wondering what are some things I should be preparing for UC admissions. Should I be worried about things like my GPA, extracurriculars, or something else? Any advice about what to focus on would be super helpful!
It's great to hear that you are considering applying to a UC school. When you are planning for that, there are a few factors you might want to take into account:
GPA: The UC system does indeed look at GPA. The minimum GPA requirement is 3.0 for California residents and 3.4 for out-of-state applicants. However, for more competitive UC schools like Berkeley and UCLA, the average unweighted GPAs of accepted students are often much higher.
Academic Rigor: UC schools also take into account the rigor of your high school curriculum. They like to see that you've challenged yourself with Advanced Placement (AP) courses or other honors or college-level courses.
Extracurriculars: While GPA and academics are important, UC schools do consider applicant’s extracurricular activities. Quality is indeed more important than quantity. In your application, you'll have the opportunity to list your activities and describe your involvement. UC schools judge extracurriculars using the 4 Tiers of Extracurriculars, so prioritize those that allow you to demonstrate leadership, passion, or significant dedication.
Personal Insight Questions: The UC application includes 8 Personal Insight Questions. You will select 4 of these to answer. These are essentially short essays (350 words each) where you'll have the chance to discuss your life experiences and reflect on what you've learned from them. Make sure to choose questions that allow you to highlight different aspects of your experience and personality.
Coursework Requirement: UC has a set of high school courses that you must complete with a grade of C or better. These are known as the "A-G" requirements and include History/Social Science, English, Mathematics, Laboratory Science, Language Other than English, Visual and Performing Arts, and College Preparatory Electives.
It's important to note that UC schools are test-blind for the 2024-2025 application cycle, meaning they do not consider SAT or ACT scores at all. While tests may have formerly played a large role in the application, you can now focus your time and energy on the areas mentioned above.
Hope this helps, and best of luck in your college application journey!
